Projects Offered

Breeze Block Sculpture

Breezeblock sculptures utilise traditional stone masonry techniques on light-weight aerated concrete blocks (breezeblocks). Unlike traditional stone, the blocks are soft and easy to carve making them an ideal medium for the first sculptural experiences of children. They can be painted an array of vibrant colours and coated for protection against the weather for outdoor creations.

Sculpture 4 Schools can suggest a range of exciting projects ranging from Totem Poles, Plant Pot surrounds ‘Easter Island’ style figureheads, to Dragons & Lochness Monsters. Further, exciting new ideas have been devised incorporating crushed, coloured glass (tumbled for safety) - only your imagination is the limit!

Silk Painting

Silk painting workshops are available for KS2 – 4 and art exam level. Silk Painting can be experienced by a whole class of children by splitting the class into groups of up to 15 and booking a half day sessions. From interpreting masterpieces to painting their own designs, an exhibition of the finished mounted and framed pictures can also be arranged.

Newspaper Sticks Construction

A one day workshop is available making large indoor constructions from re-cycled newspaper sticks.  The whole class can be put into groups to work on different models within a theme. The possibilities are endless – space rockets, flight or buildings & bridges.  These robust constructions can be free standing or hung from the ceiling. Great fun for everyone, the constructions can be left as sticks, painted or worked on later with mod-rock. There is potential to develop team work and links with the Science or Design &  Technology National Curriculum.

Soapstone Carving

Soapstone comes in a variety of dark and pastel colours from around the world and is delightful to carve. Specialist workshops are available for GCSE and A level Art courses, using soapstone carving tools. The students will work on pieces of stone between 2kg and 5kg. Only small models in fired clay or plasticine are needed to prepare for the carving.  S4S can oversee this preparation or work with the models already made in art lessons.

Ceramics

Sculpture for Schools can now offer clay workshops to KS1 and KS2 children. The work can be fired by S4S if the school is local to Northamptonshire otherwise the school would need access to a kiln.

For KS1 - We recommend an exciting workshop on 'African Masks'. The children will get to handle real carved wooden masks and draw inspiration from them for their own work. Groups of up to 20 are possible and 4 groups per day can be accommodated.

For KS2 - S4S has in addition to 'African Masks', collections of shells, fossils and many things to do with Egyptology. Self-portaits is another theme which could be explored.

Chainsaw Carving

This is a new venture for the artist Carrie Yuen who is now available to accept commissions for wood carvings for schools. The gallery shows examples of stand-alone carvings, alternatively the artist could work with children's designs to create a relief-carved bench, for example. The bench could support breezeblock sculptures made by KS2 children and ceramic tiles made by KS1&2 'artists'. Please ask for further details.
